Water Watchdogs

River watchdogs monitor construction near the Pequannock RiverSadly, despite increased awareness of the importance and fragility of the Pequannock River, the environmental laws protecting it are frequently violated. In these situations concerned citizens, including our members, are the river's best defense.

In recent years such reports have led to correction of problems in Kinnelon, Butler, West Milford, Bloomingdale, Riverdale and Pompton Lakes. Remember that even slight indications can often mean substantial impacts. For example, a 10% increase in silt and sediment can reduce trout spawning success by a whopping 90%. And a single gallon of gasoline can contaminate a million gallons of water!

So if you see something that just doesn't look right - heavy equipment at work on the riverbank, an unusual odor, an oily sheen, or silt in the water - then pick up the phone and call us at 973-492-3212. The only call you will ever regret is the one you didn't make!
