"Be the Rain"
September 13, 2003 (West Milford, NJ) - Friends
and members of the Pequannock River Coalition once again
displayed their almost superhuman tenacity by having their
annual autumn hike in the POURING RAIN! "We don't have
rain dates", declared Executive Director Ross Kushner.
This writer now knows the difference between water-repellent
and water-proof. Soaked through three layers of clothes,
it was like falling into a swimming pool fully dressed.
Anyway, the scenery was actually worth it
and warm temperatures made the rain bearable. The Macopin
Gorge is one of those unknown gems of the New Jersey Highlands.
Once into the woods, it was like entering a different world.
Lush green forested slopes surround the Macopin River somewhere
in West Milford. The Macopin is a category one trout production
stream that empties into the Pequannock River.
The rain didn't dampen spirits and the hike
loop was completed in about four hours.
